Contrary to popular belief, I actually love erotica. I've been on the search for some good stuff recently, and god have I read so many bad ones. I'm happy to say that In Her Closet was not one of them.
The fact that basically everyone in this book were POC's made me jump up and down with joy.
Yves Santiago is a promiscuous blogger who documents her sexual conquests on her blog Lust Diaries. Relationships aren't really her thing, and she's perfectly content being with a lot of somebodies. That is, until she meets Elijah Weinstein, a non-fiction editor who has shown interest in her blog.
This book doesn't follow the typical tropes in a lot of erotica these days and I appreciate that. The story was compelling, the characters complex. So many times I did a literal fist pump at its awesomeness, it was truly that great.
There were so many things about this that I appreciated, the lack of slut shaming, and the fact In Her Closet treated BDSM with the care it deserves.
I absolutely loved Yves. She's a smartass, an awesome writer and she isn't ashamed of her promiscuity. I was cheering her on the entire time. I liked the love interest- stress on the word like. Some may swoon over Elijah but overall I was just meh about him. He wasn't a bad guy, a nice one in fact, but I didn't really fall in love with his character. It was Yves who stole the show.
I also loved was the family dynamics that were painted here. It was something that I myself can relate to, and while there was some seriousness that came along with this book, there was also a lot of humor. Yves' inner monologues were completely enjoyable.
Harrison really has a way with writing her characters. This was a surprisingly great read by an author that was not known to me. I'm definitely interested in reading the next one.
