Dog with a Bone (Black Dog, Book 1) Reviewed

Not half bad. Hailey Edwards has brought readers a short and sweet novel. However, the argument could be said that the story is a little too short. Running at about 184 pages the book is very compacted together, delivering a very solid story about a girl who has chosen a life if only to stay at home. Edwards can say much with less, and that is a strong talent to have as a writer. The readers can understand who this character is, what her motivation is, and why she's in this life. It's not easy for her to be herself because she doesn't have full control over her power, and that makes realistic. There is so much power built into the character, but her emotions, they tend to control her power, and that is a very humanistic and realistic approach to creating this character. Thierry is essentially a child in the faerie realm because she's only sixteen, but her situation is unique yet still relatable.

The characterization is essential in this novel because it's the driving force behind the story. The dynamics, the tension, it's clear for the reader, making it an enjoyable read. Edwards also doesn't spoon-feed the reader. She gives the reader enough details about the past to build up these characters and their relationships without hindering the story. The past is important to the characters, but it's something that can be built upon later only because it's not essential to the plot. Again, Edwards just keeps it brief; she gives the reader enough information to maintain the story entertaining to read.

However, it's too short. On one hand, it certainly makes the reader want more of the series, but on the other hand, some of the character dynamics could have been flushed out just a tad more. For a story that took a dark turn rather quickly, those dynamics, those emotions, and the reactions could have been flushed out more and would not have hindered the story. Everything just moves so fast that even though the reader is entertained, there is little breathing room to allow the reader to sit back and the story.

It's a quick story but the author, Edwards, she devoted a lot of time to get as much in the story with excellent storytelling and a talent for using her words precisely. It's a story with a packed with punches in every word. (★★★★☆ | B+)
