a review of Seven Souls by mortimerknits
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.
The first installment in the Harrow series, Seven Souls, welcomes readers to Harrow, GA where police detective Phoebe Harris uses her gift of psychometry to solve crimes. One psychic child and a car accident later, Phoebe has a voice in her head, a murder eerily similar to her first case on the Harrow PD, and the need to find answers to her questions (personal and professional) regardless of the cost.
The book starts strong with solid world building and character introductions. Unfortunately, grammatical errors and an unfocused, overstuffed plot quickly overshadow the promising storyline. Character interaction and dialogue is awkward and stalls early in the book. Stark’s primary foreshadowing device involves the dropping of questionably relevant one-time thoughts and statements into the story with the subtly of a bulldozer.
Stark’s concept has potential and under the guidance of a good editor the next installment should be worth reading.
