a review of The Children of Darkness by Carolinasongbird
Review of The Children of Darkness by David Litwack
I was fortunate enough to be gifted a copy of The Children of Darkness by the author in exchange for an honest review. In my opinion, this was a fantastic dystopian fantasy. It takes place a thousand years after a terrible time of violence and social collapse occurred. The vicars of the Temple of Light call that time “the Darkness” and ushered in peace by getting rid of all the technological advances that they saw as the cause of the Darkness of the past. For the past thousand years, they have ruled through the use of their “temple magic” and fear. They make sure that the people they rule stay scared by the taking of some of the children from each town and putting them through a process called “teaching”. Orah, Nathaniel, and Thomas grew up in the small village, Little Pond. After Thomas is one of the ones chosen for a teaching, he is clearly a broken man when he comes home. When Orah comes of age, she is also chosen. Out of fear of what will happen to her, Nathaniel goes on a rescue mission that leads to the vicars hunting down the three friends as being dangers to the Temple. If they are going to escape the wrath of the vicars they must convince the other villagers of the truth behind the Temple of Light and its agenda. Will they be able to convince their fellow villagers to stand up to the Temple of Light or will they end up prisoners for the rest of their lives?
The story was well written and moved at a good pace all the way through. The characters were well rounded and experienced growth as the book progressed. Even the vicars were not completely evil.I enjoyed that there wasn’t one way to look at things. I’m very much looking forward to the sequel that comes out in November to see how issues are resolved. Thank you, David for allowing me to read your book!
