When I initially started reading this book I thought it was a typical light YA. The opening was a bit dark, but soon it was into the lighter hearted, bantering dialog that I was expecting. The shifting narrator initially seemed like an interesting story telling device but somewhere around the middle of the book it got annoying and I really just wanted a single third person narrator instead of constantly shifting. The story is quite interesting, alien humans with special powers, fears in the establishment, prophesies and rebellion all wrapped up in a little teenaged irreverence. Which brings us with my problems with the book. I feel like there's a disconnect between the serious story telling and the irreverent in-between dialog. The story is actually spectacular and I won't deny the tears at the ending, but the storytelling leaves a little to be desired from time to time. Sometimes the characters are typical teens, then suddenly they are not, then they are back to being goof-ball nerds and valley girls. I'm not sure if it is the effect of having two authors or if it was intentional but it often broke the rhythm of the story telling. I do think I will be looking for the sequel as the story is strong enough to make me want to see how it ends, I just hope the story-telling improves.
